Lucas Oil 500 Festival Parade

The 500 Festival Parade is one of the staples of Indianapolis in May, and I had the opportunity to create a variety of items for the 2026 Parade. My main focus was to design the look of the signage and then take that visual language and translate it to everything from directional A-frames to mesh that would cover the TV zone announcer tower. Because these signs are going to be used across multiple years, I created a look that felt classic to the Parade by using staples of the 500 Festival brand, like checkers, the color red, and geometric backgrounds.

In addition to designing the general Parade look, I also created items for this year’s Parade theme, “Racing Through History.” 2026 is significant to the Parade, as it represents the 70th annual Parade. This year’s theme focused on the history of the Parade, while also looking forward to the future. I represented this theme visually through deeper vintage colors that reference racing flags, along with silver gradients, graphic motion lines, stars, and checkered patterns. I used these elements to create a badge to give to the hundreds of Boy Scouts who helped with the Parade and created a thank you challenge coin to give to our corporate members. This year’s coin was special, as it was two-sided to highlight the 70th Parade and the 50th running of the Indy Mini Marathon.
